Merino Wool Tops

What is the difference between Top and Roving?

If you are interested in spinning, you may want to try different types of wool preparations, then decide what is your favorite.

Top is a wool fiber that has been run through a wool comb (giant hair comb).

You may find a true top, which is usually processed by hand. All the fibers are oriented in the same direction with very little spacing between them. You may also find a commercial top,  which is machine processed.

Roving is a wool fiber which has been run through a carding machine.

Rowing fibers are not all oriented in the same direction, and creates a fuzzy texture. Roving is a great fiber for felting.
